September 2011

EVENT   1ST GOLD CHALLENGE CHARITY MASCOT RACE
VENUE   Crystal Palace National Sports Centre Track, South London

Friday 2nd September 2011, 10.00am

As Team AVIVA GB & N. Ireland Athletes bring home 7 medals from the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Daegu Korea ranking 6th on the international medals table...

Team ACLT show the home crowd and UK charity supporters how to go for Gold too with the Gold Challenge - an official charity fundraiser for the London 2012 Olympics

The ACLT (African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust) charity mascot "Super Donor Dan" went head to head with Rainbow Trust's "George & Zippy", Action Medical Research's "Paddington Bear", WWF "Panda", Marie Curie Cancer Care's "Daffy" even Greenpeace's "Paula Polar Bear" and others in a battle to see who could run the 100m the fastest and jump the longest as they competed in the UK's only Olympic & Paralympic sport based charity challenge, Gold Challenge

The charity challenge has over 130 UK charities on board. The iconic Crystal Palace saw the crème de la crème of charity mascots compete for gold. Around 15 charity mascots (listed below) stepped up to the starting blocks to compete for the chance to win the gold medal in the 100m sprint and Long Jump Olympic sport events

Gold Challenge CHARITY MASCOTs featured:

• ACLT - Super Donor Dan                                    • NDCS - Ned the Bear
• Action Medical Research - Paddington Bear   • Rainbow Trust - George & Zippy
• Cancer Research UK - CRUK Silver Ball             • Right To Play - Red ball
• Greenpeace - Paula the Polar Bear                   • Save The Rhino - Rhino

ACLT's Super Donor Dan swooped in to take the Gold medal place

ACLT were closely followed by Cancer Research UK's Silver Ball who took the Silver medal in a dramatic race for the line and photo finish. Official race times went taken as its all in good fun, but it may have been a charity mascot record??!!

'SUPER DONOR DAN'

represents all lifesaving donors - our everyday super heroes

'Super Donor Dan' is named in honour of ACLT spearhead, the late Daniel De-Gale who beat leukaemia but lost his life in October 2008, aged 21, due to multiple organ failure. Daniel's Olympic dream was to support the 2012 Games athletes having trained as a Sports Therapist at London Metropolitan University

ACLT's Super Donor Dan mascot winner was W K. Raphael a.k.a Raph "Minus 1 Kidney"

Raph is a life saving kidney donor, dedicated charity supporter and sports fundraiser. After post race celebrations Raph said "I am so proud, totally surprised and delighted to get the Gold, but in my eye's, all the Gold Challenge charities are winners. I'm a distance runner, but I've now realised a new talent for 100m"

ACLT Gold Challenge is raising funds to find more lifesavers

The ACLT is a leading health charity dedicated to raising awareness of the severe shortage of donors on the UK blood, bone marrow and organ donor registries, particularly from under-represented minority ethnic communities. Funds raised support the ACLT's grassroots work to promote donation, educate communities and register lifesavers in the UK to help fight leukaemia, other blood cancers and life-threatening conditions

ACLT became a Gold Challenge Charity Partner to encourage supporters of all ages and ethnic backgrounds to get active and excited about London 2012, raising funds to get more donors registered

Dr Samantha Walker, ACLT Gold Challenge Administrator said

"It's a real privilege to have supporters like Raph who represent all the everyday donors out there who have taken the time to save the lives of those who courageously battle life-threatening conditions. As a kidney, blood and bone marrow donor and regular charity runner - Raph is a real life Super Hero. He truly shows us all that being a donor can be part of everyday life and is absolutely no hindrance to having fun with a full and active lifestyle."

Raph ‘Minus 1 Kidney' is captain of ACLT Gold Challenge team - ‘Living Donors'

whose members share their commitment as blood donors and complete the 2012 Km endurance Gold Challenge. Raph has also received a nomination from the ACLT charity as an Olympic Torchbearer for a moment to shine on behalf of donors in the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay

"It's great to see families, friends and workmates united in their efforts to make a difference for themselves and their communities, together they leave a lasting legacy to improve the health and wellbeing of the world's communities in the future."

Gold Challenge is the charity challenge where participants of all ages and abilities take on Olympic and Paralympic sports to raise money for their chosen Gold Challenge charities

Everyone aged 7 upwards can take part in Gold Challenge as an individual or as part of a team. Participants choose their own challenges to try out and improve their sports skills for a good cause
