What’s worse than having Leukaemia?
Being Black and having Leukaemia
We’re all the same underneath aren’t we?
Not when it comes to Leukaemia
How many leukaemia patients die because they're black?
If you’re unlucky enough to get leukaemia
We hope you are lucky enough to be white
So what…if you are Black or Mixed race?
It’s shocking but it’s true, your chances of finding a lifesaving bone marrow donor ARE much more worse if you’re BLACK
…because there are 24 times more white people than black people on UK bone marrow registers.
The ACLT recently held two Super Donation Days, which aimed to boost the number of lifesaving bone marrow donors. These were the results:
Choice FM (Global Radio) in Leicester Square – Saturday 22nd June
75 new potential bone marrow donors
Galaxy FM (Global Radio) in Birmingham – Saturday 10th July
28 new potential bone marrow donors
These numbers fall far short of our expectations and have left us flummoxed as to why the response has been so low.
For years we have heard the ‘needles’ fears of our communities and in response we have now made it easier to register with the new quick and easy saliva test…
YET the response has been pitiful!
We launched a local and regional media campaign to encourage the Black, Mixed race and Asian communities to step forward as lifesavers. The valiant few who did sign up at these 2 events were mainly people who had been approached by our street teams in Leicester Square or Birmingham city centre.
Our street teams and promoters were shocked by the excuses they received.
Have Your Say
We want to better understand the huge increase in apathy and reluctance of the public, starting with the Black & Mixed Race community. We urge people from these communities to have their say and submit participate in a short opinion poll.
Are you aware of the issue?
Are you bothered?
Is this a priority concern for you today?
We must understand people’s motivations and act now to try and prevent the lack of donors having a detrimental impact on the lives of those sufferers in urgent need.
Please take 5 minutes to send us your views to:
