Results of the 1st 'Daniel De-Gale Blood Donation Day and Week' 

Following on from the 1st very successful ‘Daniel De-Gale Blood Donation Day’ at the West End Donor Centre in Central London on March 17th 09 when 90 Black and Mixed Race people donated a unit of blood, we would like to say ‘thank you’ to everyone who attended the 2nd Daniel De-Gale Blood Donation sessions which took place from Monday 5th October till Friday 9th October 09. The sessions took place in Central London, Birmingham, Croydon and Bristol.

In Daniel’s memory the ACLT & the NBS commenced a week long campaign to encourage the Black and Mixed Race community to donate a unit (475 mls) of blood and in total 263 Black & Mixed Race people donated 1 unit and we also managed to recruit an additional 30 new bone marrow donors.  Most in attendance were already on the bone marrow register.

Our aim was to mark the 1st anniversary of Daniel’s passing and to celebrate all that he achieved in his life by encouraging the community to step forward and to donate blood on a regular basis to help the many people requiring frequent and/or life saving blood transfusions and to become potential bone marrow donors.

The ACLT and the NBS coordinated the ‘Daniel De-Gale Blood Donation Week’ to commemorate the 1st anniversary since Daniel passed away on the 8th October 2008.

The age to register and donate Blood is 17-65 years. The age to register as a bone marrow donor with the NBS is 18-49 (staying on the register till your 60th birthday).

We invited the general public to donate 475mls of blood for transfusion purposes.

40 minutes of their time was all it took to save someone's life.
