BSc in Sports Therapy

On Friday 4th December Beverley De-Gale & Orin Lewis attended a graduation ceremony in Human Sciences for the London Metropolitan University at the Barbican Centre in Central London.

In Daniel De-Gale’s absence they were invited to receive his BSc Degree in Sports Therapy.

University regulations permit in particular circumstances, where a student is unable to complete his or her course, what they call an Aegrotat award to be conferred. An Aegrotat award takes account of the likely outcome if a student had been able to complete the requirements of the course.

The Chair of the University Awards Board, with the agreement of External Awards Examiners, agreed an Aegrotat award on the basis of Daniel's performance in those parts of the course that he was able to complete.

Where conferred posthumously, the award was proudly accepted by Daniel’s mother Beverley.

Daniel’s parents said:

‘We wanted to say ‘thank you’ to everyone at London Metropolitan University for making our family feel so welcome and making Daniel’s graduation so special for all of us. We all had a wonderful day and felt so proud to be there for Dan. To be able to go up on the stage and collect his award was a moment we will treasure forever'.

Beverley said, that over the years Daniel and the charity have collected a number of awards because of the life saving work we are doing; we have these awards in our office. However, representing Daniel at the graduation ceremony was a very special moment.

He worked very hard to get his degree, at times he was so ill but determined to get into University to attend lectures and to pick up course work etc. He spoke about doing a Masters in Physiotherapy and was heading for the 2012 Olympics.

He now has the icing on the cake and we very much appreciate everything that was done to ensure Daniel was able to achieve part of his goal. Thank You.

Once the graduation certificate has been received it will take pride of place at the De-Gale/Lewis home.

‘Spirit of London’ Award

The Damilola Taylor Trust proudly hosted the ‘Spirit of London’ Awards. The inaugural event was a celebration of the wonderful young people of our capital city in conjunction with the Mayor of London and the 33 Boroughs.

The ‘Spirit of London’ Awards has been designed to celebrate young people from various walks of life whose common bond is that they are sons or daughters of the greatest city on the planet. Whether London born or adopted Londoners the Spirit of London Awards will go to young people who are a credit to the local communities whose culture and heritage light up the City by adding passion to the prestige of London life.

Therefore we were naturally delighted that the ACLT was presented with an award for Special Recognition for Daniel De-Gale.

The organisers of Spirit of London made the following statement:

‘Daniel is a London Legend and as such we are honoured ourselves to be able to posthumously award him the ‘Special Recognition’ award by presenting his parents with the trophy. He truly represented all that is great about the wonderful multicultural city of London’.

The event was held at Alexandra Palace.
