Donating blood was never a main concern for me and the importance of it remained vague until the words "give blood today" kept sneaking up on me. As a young person I guess I took more of the nonchalant approach to such a serious matter being more attracted to the things that mean so little in life.
My Aunt already worked for the ACLT and she would tell me stories about some of the
people who were receiving help. I'd speak to her one week and it would be "he or she is such a laugh, they are so nice...they have leukaemia" then the next time would be
"We couldn't find a match...they passed away". I started working for the ACLT in May 2007 because I wanted to help others, I wanted to make a difference and most importantly I wanted to save someone’s life.
This is the fact young people are in demand; we are healthier than other age groups and in an enhanced position to give. I gave blood for the first time on May 28th 2007 and the feeling I got from this good deed no words can possibly explain. Blood is a medicine; it is the gift of life and knowing that my blood could one day save a life is a blessing and it’s priceless!
I'm just waiting patiently for that phone call and the voice to say “Miss Crosby you are a match!”
Best wishes
Carla Crosby age 24
